Pre-Conference Sessions

Think you have no time for professional development? Think again! Pre-conference sessions are a great way to stay ahead of the curve by gaining access to information you won’t find anywhere else. Plus, you’ll earn while you learn. In addition to the CEUs you will receive for your full paid registration and attendance at ANC, you can earn even more CEUs by participating in one of the pre-conference sessions previewed below. Pre-conference sessions also allow you to earn Key Area Hours toward initial certification or for moving up a level. Learn more about the SNA Certificate Program.

Chapter Leadership Day

It’s a new year, and chapter leaders are looking for fresh, new ideas to invigorate local groups. If you’re a local or state SNA chapter leader, don’t miss this annual interactive, informative and fun event on Saturday, July 11, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm featuring topics such as developing a strong leadership team, planning effective and engaging meetings, building membership, and more. Registration is required. The cost is $25, which includes breakfast.

Community Eligibility—An Opportunity for Educational Change
Speaker: Cynthia Ham, SNS
Are you considering the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP)? Evaluate the feasibility of CEP by identifying your district’s key stakeholders, many of whom oversee other federal programs. Recognize this is a change that affects other programs and is a chance for positive educational change as well. Learn how to implement CEP in stages with forms and procedures that make the process easier.

USDA Foods Distribution Program Overview

Davis County School District Nutrition…a Community Program
(Off-Site School Visit)
This off-site session will include a visit to the Davis County School District Nutrition Center to see firsthand how the district runs a successful business that benefits the community. A tour of the facility will include a program detailing the types of nutrition programs offered, the number of meals produced and the number of reimbursable meals served. You will also learn how to market by self-promotion–the best promoters being the staff themselves. Transportation will be provided to and from the Davis County School District Nutrition Facility. A box lunch will be provided.

Nutrition 101: A Taste for Food and Fitness
Speaker: Dayana Bray, RD, NFSMI
School nutrition employees and managers are invited to attend this FREE training from NFSMI. As you serve students healthy school meals, gain a basic overview of nutrition and the importance of nutrition in your daily life. The program offers tools for guiding food choices, information on macronutrients and micronutrients, information to assist you in making good diet decisions, and an overview of nutrition issues in the media. Advanced registration required. Space is limited. Lunch not included. Attendees will break for a one hour lunch on their own.

State Agency Pre-Con: Taking the Super Circular from Theory to Application
Speakers: Donna Parsons, RD, SNS, Representatives from the SNA State Agency Committee and USDA officials
The new Federal consolidated regulations for financial management regulations, commonly referred to as the “Super Circular,” has been released and many agencies are working on the implementation phase. This final guidance supersedes and streamlines requirements from OMB Circulars A-21, A-87, A-110, A-122, and Circulars A-89, A-102 and A-133; and the guidance in Circular A-50 on Single Audit Act follow-up. This pre conference session will provide assistance in the application of the new circular to child nutrition programs. Lunch will be provided.

Supervisory Skill Training for Managers

English, Spanish or Spanglish? Challenges and Solutions to Training Spanish-Speaking Staff
Speakers: Gabriela Pacheco, RDN, Sandra Kemp, SNS and Dora Rivas, RD, SNS
Brainstorm the most effective methods to ensure your district is successfully training entry-level Spanish-speaking cafeteria staff to serve reimbursable meals, all while teaching some key basic English language skills. This is important in many tasks, like reading labels on cleaning supplies. Effective training = meals that are safe and compliant while avoiding mistakes due to language barriers. You don’t have to speak Spanish to attend this session!

Finding, Buying and Serving Local Foods in Your District
Speakers: Deborah Kane and Christina Conell 
From bison in Montana, to kiwi in California and radishes in Rhode Island, school districts across the country are bringing school meals to life with creative sourcing strategies and partnerships with local producers. Going local is a great way to promote your school meal programs and get kids to try new foods. Learn how your school cafeteria can support children’s discoveries about where food comes from and what’s seasonal in your area. Topics include requests for proposals, invitations for bid, forward contracting and geographic preference.

“Student-Centered” Customer Service
Speaker: Kern Halls
In this interactive training workshop led by award-winning foodservice marketer Kern Halls, learn proven marketing strategies and customer service tactics to nudge kids toward the healthy meals you are serving and increase participation. You will explore best practices from top service establishments and learn how the cafeteria staff can help “teach” students about making healthy choices.

SNA reserves the right to cancel any pre-conference session due to low registration. In the event of a cancellation, the Association will contact registrants. SNA advises pre-conference registrants to wait to make schedule-dependent transportation plans until May 15.
