Education Sessions

This year, once again, SNA's Annual National Conference (ANC) education program is built around the four key areas of the Association's Certificate and Credentialing programs. These are the same four key areas in USDA Professional Standards.

Nutrition (Key Area 1): These sessions will cover the A-to-Zs of nutrition, including how school meal, snack and a la carte items contribute to healthy eating habits and how school nutrition personnel are actively involved in nutrition education at the school level.

Operations (Key Area 2): Presentations will demonstrate the importance of establishing a school nutrition environment where policies and procedures ensure worker safety, as well as the safety and quality of meals.

Administration (Key Area 3): Presentations will focus on ways to manage and administer the challenges of today’s school nutrition program, including ensuring sound business and financial practices, human resources excellence and district organization.

Communications & Marketing (Key Area 4): These sessions will highlight ways to promote a positive image of school nutrition programs and work with the school community and allied organizations to promote nutritious foods and nutrition education.


Roundtable Sessions

Don't miss the roundtable education sessions, introduced last year at ANC Boston, and back again this year! These 60-minute interactive discussions are designed as think-tank sessions where you can brainstorm, share challenges and successes and takeaway applicable skills that you can implement at work! Space is limited between 60-100 participants (depending on the meeting room) and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Behavioral economics - the practice of altering the physical environment in order to affect purchasing and consumption behavior - lies at the heart of the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement. Attend this upbeat and energetic session led by Cornell's Kathryn Hoy to gain a solid foundation behind Smarter Lunchroom interventions, to understand why traditional methods of influencing eating behavior have failed and why Smarter Lunchrooms' 6 Principles have proven to be so much more successful. You will be able to apply these principles directly to your cafeteria and influence students to make healthy choices.

The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 is set to expire in September 2015. Come and hear from SNA's State Agency Representative, the State Agency Committee members and USDA officials on what to expect with the re-authorization of this landmark child nutrition law. Updates will be provided on such priority issues as USDA Foods, Research projects and Professional Standards, just to name a few. Details regarding the annual USDA/State Agency Training Workshop scheduled for November 2015 will also be provided.

CEP: Making It Work in Major City Districts (3310)

The national roll-out of the new Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) has exceeded all expectations among small and mid-size school districts. Some of the country's largest school nutrition programs have encountered obstacles blocking their way forward. This session will feature panelists from large districts who have made it work. They'll share details of their successful approach: how they made the case for CEP with the key stakeholders in their communities, found alternate data to support educational funding requirements, navigated state regulations and are benefiting from increased participation. Don't miss this valuable session, which will feature practical advice and plenty of Q&A time for your key concerns. Open to Major City Directors only. 


Ringing the Supper Bell: How to Implement, Optimize, and Promote After School Supper (3230)

Are you interested in operating an After School Supper program in your district? Come get tips and advice on how to run a successful program including partnering with other organizations.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

All ANC attendees who attend the full conference will earn 12 continuing education units (CEUs) toward SNA's Certificate Program, the SNS Credential renewal and USDA Professional Standards, where applicable. CEUs for ANC education and pre-conference sessions can be used to apply for an initial certificate, move up a certificate level or count toward USDA professional standards annual training, if applicable. 

Tracking Training

A tracking grid was provided at Registration for attendees to track training taken at ANC. For your convenience, each pre-conference session and education session has been coded to correspond with USDA's Professional Standards Learning Topics and the four key areas. The training tracking grid is also available at the Member Services Booth and electronically here.

Information for SNA's Level 2 and Level 3 Certificate

Effective July 1, 2015, SNA no longer requires "two hours of instructional time bundled together" in each key area formerly known as "Key Area Hours," as initial application requirements for levels 2 and 3 of SNA's Certificate Program. Instead, the same instructional time is required to apply for Levels 2 and 3 but a minimum of one hour instructional time by key area (instead of 2 bundled hours) will be accepted. SNA My Account

The exact education sessions you have taken by key area at ANC will not be populated in your SNA My Account online record. You must complete your own tracking grid and save it in your files. When applying for a Level 2 or Level 3 Certificate, you will need to submit the tracking grid along with the certificate application form, additional documentation and payment to SNA.
