President Releases Proclamation Recognizing National School Lunch Week

On October 12, the White House released the official proclamation for National School Lunch Week 2012. “During National School Lunch Week, we recognize all those whose dedicated work and care make good nutrition a reality for our sons and daughters.” The proclamation also reminds us that, “Our students deserve the best possible chance to live healthy, productive lives. Since the National School Lunch Program was founded over six decades ago, schools have served over 200 billion lunches that have helped generations of children achieve in the classroom and grow into our country's next generation of leaders.” To read the proclamation in its entirety, click here.

Chef Donnie Barclift from Oakland Unified School District Wins Yum-O! Healthy School Lunch Contest

In celebration of October’s National School Lunch Week, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Alliance), SNA and the Yum-o! organization have announced Donnie Barclift from Oakland Unified School District as the winner of Rachael Ray’s Yum-o! Healthy School Lunch Contest with his recipe for Pozole con Pescado. The contest asked school chefs from around the country to submit an innovative, delicious, healthy school lunch—including meat/meat alternative, bread/grain, vegetables and fruit—which meet or exceed the new USDA school meal guidelines. More than 50 recipes were received and three lunches were selected to be prepared and judged in a school cafeteria by students and with representatives from the Alliance, Yum-o! and SNA. The recipes were judged on nutrition, appeal to students, ease of replication in schools, and presentation. To learn more, click here.

The recipes are available for free to any school in the country by visiting the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s website at www.healthiergeneration.org/schoolmeals.

USDA FNS is Seeking Comments - Independent Review of Applications Required by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010

In accordance with Section 304 of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, a proposed rule was released which would require local education agencies participating in the National School Lunch Program and demonstrating high levels of, or a high risk for administrative error associated with certification, verification, and other administrative processes to conduct an independent review of the initial eligibility determinations for free and reduced price school meals for accuracy prior to notifying households of eligibility or ineligibility.

This proposed rule is expected to reduce administrative errors in eligibility. To read the full posting, click here. Please review the notice and share your comments with Cathy Schuchart, SNA Staff Vice President of Child Nutrition & Policy, at cschuchart@schoolnutrition.org by October 30, 2012.
