USDA Radio Update on the New Meal Pattern

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Radio News Service recently featured “New School Meal Standards Start This School Year.” The radio audio, which featured Gary Crawford, USDA/FNS Under Secretary Kevin Concannon and Food Service Director, Serena Suthers, Prince William County, Va., provided information for parents who will have kids in school this fall, who may come home talking about the different foods they are being served in the cafeteria. Kids State Dinner at The White House

On August 20, 2012, 54 kids from all over the United States had lunch with the First Lady in the East Room for the first-ever Kids' State Dinner. Each of these young people worked with their parents to create an original lunch recipe. They designed a dish that was healthy, affordable, and tasty—and which met the nutritional guidelines set up by USDA. A panel of judges from the groups who partnered with the Let’s Move! campaign on this project—the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Education, and Epicurious—chose these 54 recipes as their favorites. You can find more information at www.letsmove.gov/kids-state-dinner.

SNA Releases 2012 Back to School Trends Report

SNA’s 2012 Back to School Trends Report shows that school foodservice professionals are finding creative ways to prepare and serve school meals that meet healthy new nutrition standards. Schools are offering more fruits, vegetables and whole grains and are limiting the sodium, calories and saturated and trans fat in school meals. One finding is that over 55% of responding school districts have a self-serve salad or produce bar. To learn more about the report, click here.

Executive Summaries from ANC Available: “Meeting the NSLP New Meal Pattern” and “Earning and Keeping Your 6 Cents”

SNA is sharing Executive Summaries of popular sessions from last month’s Annual National Conference (ANC) in order to provide information to all members. The first one, “We Can Do This: Advice and Resources for Meeting the NSLP New Meal Pattern,” covers the highlights and Q&A covered during the popular hot topic session. The second summary is of the session “Earning and Keeping Your 6 Cents,” which was presented by USDA and covers the requirements for school food authorities to become certified.

You can download these and other helpful resources at www.schoolnutrition.org/mealpattern. These summaries are under the header Executive Summaries from ANC 2012.

SNA Updated Meal Pattern Implementation Guide

SNA has updated the meal pattern implementation guide, which was released last month during ANC 2012 in Denver. The updated August 2012 version of the guide is available for download at www.schoolnutrition.org/mealpattern.
