USDA Revises Q & A on Meal Pattern Regulation

On April 27, 2012, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provided a revised memo entitled: Questions & Answers on the Final Rule, “Nutrition Standards in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs.” This guidance addresses the final rule overall, and includes questions on general and specific aspects of the new meal requirements. USDA plans to revise this document periodically to issue additional Q&As as they arise during the implementation of the new meal requirements. To view the memo, click here. SNA Unveils New Strategic Plan

On May 4, 2012, at the annual National Leadership Conference in Louisville, Ky., SNA released a new strategic plan designed to direct leadership and management in prioritizing projects and initiatives in the coming years. SNA’s new strategic plan is organized around five “strategic pillars”:

  • Education and Professional Development
  • Public Image
  • Advocacy
  • Community
  • Membership

American Heart Association and United Fresh Produce Association Host Hill Briefing

The American Heart Association (AHA) and United Fresh Produce Association (UFPA) are hosting a Congressional Briefing entitled, “The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program -- A 2012 Farm Bill Priority: A Win for Agriculture, Children, Schools, Families and Public Health” at 10 am on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, in 1628 Longworth.

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) provides a fresh fruit or vegetable snack to more than three million very low income elementary students several times a week in more than 4,600 schools nationwide.

The panel consists of:

Interim Rule Amends Meal Requirements for the National School Lunch Program Under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010

USDA has published an interim rule that amends National School Lunch Program regulations to conform to requirements contained in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 regarding performance-based cash assistance for school food authorities certified compliant with meal pattern and nutrition standards. This rule requires state agencies to certify participating school food authorities that are in compliance with meal pattern and nutrition standard requirements as eligible to receive performance-based cash assistance for each reimbursable lunch served, an additional six cents per lunch beginning October 1, 2012. The interim rule is in effect July 1, 2012.

Registration and Scholarships for the 6th National Farm to Cafeteria Conference

The 6th National Farm to Cafeteria Conference: Digging In! is less than four months away! Representatives from all sectors of Farm to Cafeteria will convene in Burlington, Vt., from August 2-5, 2012, for four days of education, conversation and fun. There will be skill-building short courses, field trips to innovative Vermont farms and institutions, a diverse workshop program and plenty of opportunities to network with inspiring individuals from across the country.

USDA Farm to School Team Webinars Discussing Farm to School Grant Program

Please join USDA for two webinars this week about the Farm to School Grant Program. On Tuesday, May 15, 3:00 pm EDT, USDA will offer the “Implementation Grants” webinar. On Thursday, May 17, 1:00 pm EDT, USDA will offer our “Planning Grants” webinar. Both webinars will be presented by Deborah Kane, National Farm to School Director, FNS, and Greg Walton, Grants Management Specialist, FNS. The webinar will help to explain to interested applicants the details of the grant, and will include a brief Q&A session. Interested parties may submit questions ahead of time via the registration link below. These sessions will all be recorded and posted on the Food and Nutrition Service website shortly following the sessions.
