SNA Submits Comments on the Proposed Rule for Professional Standards

2014-04-04

April 4, 2014 - On February 4, 2014, USDA released a proposed rule to establish minimum professional standards for school nutrition personnel. SNA mobilized a representative task force of SNA members, led by Vice President Jean Ronnei, SNS, to assess the impact of the proposed rule on the school nutrition profession and programs, gather input and concerns from SNA members and craft SNA’s official comments in response to the rule.

Today, SNA submitted these comments to USDA. SNA’s comments expressed support for minimum education and training standards for school nutrition personnel, and endorsed the “grandfathering” of the education and training of currently employed personnel, as contained in the Proposed Rule.

SNA also expressed concern that some school districts will not be able to locate and retain personnel with the specified qualifications, particularly in predominantly rural or economically disadvantaged school districts. SNA provided several specific recommendations to alleviate the limitations that may prevent compliance with the Proposed Professional Standards. Click here to read SNA’s complete comments.
