SNA Continues to Track Participation Levels for Lunch and Breakfast Programs

2014-04-28

April 28, 2014 - With the many changes occurring in school nutrition programs, SNA has been monitoring monthly participation data from USDA to understand national participation trends for lunch and breakfast programs.

Preliminary monthly participation data from USDA is currently available through January 2014. SNA's NSLP and SBP Participation Tracking Report illustrates that 30.5 million students participated in the National School Lunch Program on an average day, so far, in the 2013-14 school year (September 2013- January 2014). This is a 1.5% decrease in the average number of students compared to the same time frame last school year and a 4.5% decrease when compared to the same time frame in school year 2011-12.

Participation in the School Breakfast Program has increased this school year to 13.47 million students participating on an average day (September 2013 - January 2014) when compared to the same time frame last school year and in school year 2011-12.

SNA will continue to tracking participation data as USDA releases updated reports.
