SNA Turns up the Heat on Legislation to Permanently Eliminate Grain and Protein Maximums

This week School Nutrition Association (SNA) President Sandra Ford, SNS, wrote to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce urging immediate action on H.R. 1303, the School Nutrition Flexibility Act.  The bill, which now has over 35 cosponsors, would permanently eliminate the weekly grain and protein maximums while maintaining the calorie maximums in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs.  Click here to read the letter. 

SNA called on influential industry partners and allied organizations to support the effort.  On Wednesday, May 29, the Association hosted its first of four “Industry Summits,” bringing together representatives of SNA member school foodservice companies and allied groups.  Nearly 30 federal government relations experts gathered to discuss strategies for advancing legislative priorities for the school nutrition community.  SNA shared President Ford’s letter with attendees and encouraged their organizations to send similar letters to Capitol Hill.  The group is also seeking joint meetings with congressional leaders to press for legislative action.

SNA is also leading a grassroots effort to overturn the grain/protein maximums.  The Association continues to urge all members to contact their Senators and Members of Congress to ask them to cosponsor H.R. 1303 and the Senate companion bill, S. 427.  If you have not already done so, please click here for SNA’s action alert.
