December 12, 2012—Earnestine Camp, who dedicated much of her life to the school nutrition profession, passed away December 6, 2012, at age 92. She earned a bachelor of science degree in home economics and a master’s degree in education.

During her career, which she began in 1942 prior to the enactment of the National School Lunch Act in 1946, Camp served as Southwest regional director of what was then the American School Food Service Association (ASFSA) and as advisor to the executive board of the formerly-named Arkansas School Food Service Association.

“Earnestine was an advocate, champion, encourager, supporter, leader and role model in her contributions to feeding Arkansas children and in her spiritual life. Her ability to encourage young women to exceed their own personal expectations [was tremendous, as evidenced by a comment from one person she mentored that] ‘She believed in me, more than I believed in myself,’” said Wanda Shockey, MEd, RD, director of the Child Nutrition Unit of the Arkansas Department of Education.

In lieu of flowers, Camp’s family requests that friends and colleagues make donations to The Earnestine Camp Arkansas School Fund, c/o Arkansas School Nutrition Association, P.O. Box 3542, Little Rock, AR 72203; Arkansas Children’s Hospital, # 1 Children’s Way, Little Rock, AR 72202; or Immanuel Baptist Church, 501 North Shackleford Road, Little Rock, AR 72211.

Earnestine Camp was an inspiration to me and to everyone who knew her. She was one of the pioneers that help lay the foundation for child nutrition program at the state, local, and national levels. She never gave up on her commitment to the program and to the wonderful child nutrition personnel who served the children. Her legacy for all of us is to maintain our commitment to cildren to help them be ready to learn when they go from cafeteria to classroom. She will be missed, and always remembered.

You just couldn't help but love Earnestine - she was such a genuine person. She knew our programs inside and out and she did it out of love. I would always want to hear her stories - she would put her hand on yours and always share her experiences. I never missed a chance to say hello to her even if I felt she didn't remember me - but I always reminded her of who I was and she would smile and say hello just as if she was your best friend. The pioneers of the program are such special people - thank you Earnestine for your commitment to children and those you worked with. Karen Johnson

Ernestine was a legend and friend to all.
She was one of the first ASFSA members I met and she always remembered my name, including last summer in Denver! Her commitment and dedication to child nutrition is a reminder to all of us - be the best we can be and help others. So glad I had a chance to visit with her last year.

Our beloved Miss Camp....soft spoken but undeniably passionate about the health and education of children. She inspired, motivated and encouraged all who knew her. She will be remembered for her tireless efforts to support and mentor those who worked in the school cafeterias across Arkansas and for modeling a pride and passion for providing healthy meals for children.
Miss Camp was a picture of integrity, inspiration and quiet faith and....always a lady.
