SNA President Sandra Ford Attends Nutrition + Physical Activity Connection Summit

September 27, 2012 – Last week, SNA President Sandra Ford, SNS, attended the 2012 Nutrition + Physical Activity Connection Summit at the Renaissance Capital View Hotel in Arlington, Va.

Presented by GENYOUth—in partnership with the National Dairy Council, the National Football League, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American School Health Association—the summit brought together such thought leaders as health professionals, educators, athletes, students, chefs and corporations. The goal of the summit was to explore the connection that physical activity and nutrition have to learning and behavior, as well as to examine the barriers and opportunities to help schools set and achieve wellness policies and practices.

Ford was joined by Chef Carla Hall, cohost of ABC’s “The Chew,” as well as by eight of the Fuel Up to Play 60 Student Ambassadors, to participate in a summit segment called “Crafting Healthy School Breakfasts.” During this segment, both Ford and Hall helped to reinforce the importance of breakfast, with Hall affirming that the solution to healthier kids begins with breakfast. Ford also discussed how in Manatee County (Fla.) School District, student involvement by way of taste-testing panels is the key to successfully introducing new menu items.

“Chopped” Episode Puts the Spotlight on School Nutrition

September 26, 2012 – Spoiler alert! Did you catch school nutrition professionals on “Chopped” last night? The episode highlighted how school chefs go above and beyond the call of duty by educating students, encouraging healthy lifestyles and making a difference in the community!

While Cindy Tinnel was crowned “Chopped” champion for the evening, all of the school chef competitors were awarded with generous cash prizes, as well as a special trip to visit Washington, D.C., and tour the White House garden. The episode was really a victory for all hardworking school chefs across the country.

The four school chef competitors of the "Class Acts, Too" episode were:

  • Terry Accaira, General Food Worker, Buena Vista R-31, Colo.
  • Shannon Solomon, Coordinator, Aurora Public Schools, Colo.
  • Lynnette Thomas, Manager, Saint Martinville Primary School, La.
  • Cindy Tinnel, Manager, Henry Maxwell Elementary, Nashville, Tenn.

The episode also featured a special 30-second public service announcement from SNA, promoting healthy school meals available in cafeterias all across the country.

Submit your completed Scavenger Hunt Form to be entered in SNA's special prize drawing. One winner will receive a Master Chef cookware set from All-Clad. An additional 25 winners will receive cookbooks from the Food Network library.
