SNA ANNOUNCES “CAPTURING THE SCHOOL MILK OPPORTUNITY” EDUCATION SEMINARS
New Program Sponsored by the Milk Processor Education Program

September 16, 2005, Washington, D.C. – Research has shown that improving the variety, quality and packaging of milk sold as part of school meals can increase meal participation. Capitalizing on those findings, the School Nutrition Association (SNA), in conjunction with the Milk Processor Education Program (MilkPEP), recently announced a new series of free educational seminars designed to increase participation in school nutrition programs.

The “Capturing the School Milk Opportunity” seminars demonstrate that an enhanced milk program can provide a significant opportunity to improve student nutrition, as well as school meal line satisfaction and participation. The seminar content showcases over five years of research and test marketing from schools across the United States highlighting details on how their school milk programs were improved. The seminars will educate participants on customized ways to expand their school milk program.

The 6-hour seminars are scheduled to start in late October 2005 and continue through March 2006, and will be held in over 40 cities across the U.S. The seminar is part of SNA’s Certification Program and Continuing Education Units will be applied. Details on dates, locations, and registration procedures will be available to SNA members at www.schoolnutrition.org.

“Milk plays a key role in the diet of students which is why it is a required part of the school lunch program,” say Barbara Belmont, Executive Director of the School Nutrition Association.” “The “Capturing the School Milk Opportunity’ seminar offers our members a hands-on approach to implementing proven strategies for building their school nutrition programs.”

The “Capturing the School Milk Opportunity” seminar provides participants a complete kit featuring school case studies and a Financial Calculation Tool that will help in estimating potential changes to sales and revenues. Ideas for merchandising changes, promotions, procurement, flavor testing and sampling are also included.

“MilkPEP is proud to be partnering with the School Nutrition Association. Our goal is to equip SNA members with a sound business model that demonstrates how milk can be a driver of revenues and profits to sustain a strong nutrition program,” says Victor Zaborsky, Senior Marketing Manager for the International Dairy Foods Association. “This program can help SNA members maximize the financial and nutritional benefits of milk. It is the beverage of choice for improving students’ health as well as the bottom line.”

Additional features of the “Capturing the School Milk Opportunity” Seminar include:

  • Progressive development steps that lead to a well-developed school milk program
  • Insights from school foodservice directors with details on how they reworked their milk programs
  • A review of the impact an improved milk program can have on student nutrition
  • Information on the business case that includes ways to improve food service financial performance
