Foundation Launched to Facilitate International School Feeding Efforts

LOS ANGELES (July 18, 2006) – “Pay attention to the hungry, both in this country and around the world. Pay attention to the poor... We are our brother’s keeper,”former Senator George McGovern along with former School Nutrition Association president Gene White and many more announced the creation of the Global Child Nutrition Foundation (GCNF) today during the School Nutrition Association’s 60th Annual National Conference in Los Angeles, Calif.

School feeding programs in over 70 countries provide nutritious meals to children, increase attendance at school and improve children’s ability to learn. With 300 million children around the world suffering from hunger, the need for sustained and effective school feeding programs continues to grow. The new Foundation will provide the infrastructure and training necessary to establish and support global school feeding efforts.

The ability to harness the collective strength of child nutrition advocates to effect positive change throughout the world - to make a real difference in the lives of children worldwide - is at the heart of the Global Child Nutrition Foundation. The Foundation is designed to build and support a global network of child nutrition advocates committed to expanding access to school and community-based nutrition programs.

The premise behind the Foundation is simple…but powerful: the Foundation can pull together the people and resources needed to help where assistance is needed; to provide training, networks and technical assistance to develop and sustain school feeding programs in countries around the world.

The Foundation will serve as the nucleus for all of SNA’s current global activities. It will work to expand these programs, create new opportunities and establish permanent funding for global child nutrition outreach, thereby assuring the maximum impact on children. The new Foundation will collaborate with and complement the activities of like-minded organizations committed to expanding access to school and community-based nutrition programs.

In the coming year a capital campaign will seek to raise additional funding for the new Foundation while the interim Board of Directors begins laying the ground work for the first initiatives. The Interim Board includes Gene White, Chair, Barbara S. Belmont, Secretary/Treasurer, The Honorable George McGovern, Mr. Jim Morris, Executive Director, WFP, Mr. Chuck Rumbarger, CEO, Association Management Group, Mr. Calvin Brink, President, Schwan’s Global Food Service and Rhona Applebaum, PhD., VP Science and Regulatory Affairs, the Coca Cola Company.

The Child Nutrition Foundation, established in 1964, is a non-profit corporation that provides high-quality professional development, financial aid and research programs to child nutrition professionals and members of the School Nutrition Association (SNA.) School Nutrition Professionals to “Walk” from LA to Chicago this Year

LOS ANGELES (July 18, 2006) – The hardworking men and women that plan, prepare and serve 30 million school lunches each day in America’s schools, are going for a walk. Members of the School Nutrition Association will serve as role models to students in the school environment by participating in the “Eat Smart, Get Moving” program, earning points that will take them on a virtual walk across the country from Los Angeles to Chicago. The program encourages participants to make steady changes to improve their health by incorporating physical activity into their daily routine and making healthy food choices. The School Nutrition Association (SNA) and National Dairy Council’s program launched today at SNA’s 60th Annual National Conference in Los Angeles and will culminate at the 2007 SNA Annual National Conference in Chicago.

The program focuses on energy balance between food and physical activity to help one reach and maintain personal wellness. “Eat Smart, Get Moving” is designed to allow teams to work together, tracking physical activity and food choices as “points”. These points translate into miles to help each team move from Los Angeles to Chicago. The program is organized into three phases with progressive nutrition and physical activity goals that will lead individuals and teams toward meeting key recommendations in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans – such as getting enough dairy, fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Along the way, teams can download resources from the “Eat Smart, Get Moving” Website – insert web site URL if available – to help on the journey to personal wellness.

A deliciously easy way for participants to meet the Dietary Guidelines’ recommendations for dairy is to enjoy 3-A-Day of Dairy – three servings of milk, cheese or yogurt - to help build stronger bones and healthier bodies. Recognized as the authority on school nutrition programs, SNA has 51 state affiliates, hundreds of local chapters and over 55,000 school nutrition professionals as members. Members work in and outside of schools in all facets of the school nutrition field: planning healthy school menus, ensuring the safety and security of foods served, purchasing products, providing nutrition education to students, preparing and serving meals and more.

The School Nutrition Association’s Annual National Conference (ANC) takes place each year in July at different cities across the United States. “Eat Smart, Get Moving” is being launched at ANC 2006 in Los Angeles. The program tracking period will end on May 1, 2007 and prizewinners will be recognized at SNA’s Annual National Conference in Chicago in July 2007. The National Dairy Council is sponsoring the Eat Smart, Get Moving program to complement their support of local school wellness policy resources. SNA Recognizes Three Professionals for Accomplishments in School Nutrition at ANC 2006

LOS ANGELES (July 17, 2006) – The School Nutrition Association recognized three of its own today at the 60th Annual National Conference, in Los Angeles, Calif. In addition to state award winners, three SNA members received national recognition on Sunday, July 16, 2006, for their superior accomplishments in the school nutrition arena.

National Louise Sublette Award of Excellence went to JoAnn Kilby, foodservice manager at Sedalia Park Elementary School District in Marietta, Georgia. Kilby was recognized for increasing school lunch participation from 76% at the beginning of the school year to over 90% in December 2005. She was able to get over 250 students to sign a pledge to eat healthier and exercise more daily. Out of the 23 schools that applied for a grant form “CIGNA Health Care Foundation”, Kilby was the only food service manager who received it. She had also helped develop an after school program known as the Fitness and Nutrition Club, with the help of high school students, volunteer parents and the PTA. JoAnn and her entire staff conducted school wide promotions for each grade level, which included messages about healthy eating, exercise, snacking and school meals.

National Outstanding Director of the Year was awarded to Lynnelle Grumbles, School Foodservice Director for Visalia Unified School District in Visalia, California. An SNA member for over 19 years, Grumbles went into a district facing a deficit and low employee morale. She quickly assessed the situation and went to work. A mission statement was created for the department, plus five and ten year plans to give employees vision and direction. Under her direction, menus were changed to reflect the students preferences while still meeting USDA guidelines, a school breakfast program was established, a purchasing co-op with neighboring districts to increase buying power was organized, and employees were offered training to improve their skills. She went to classrooms to teach age-appropriate nutrition lessons to students and worked with teachers and administrators on school garden and "kids cooking" programs.

National Heart of the Program was awarded to Mary VerHaagh, a foodservice employee at the De Pere Middle School in the Unified School District of De Pere, Wisconsin. Since her employment with the district in 1987, Mary VerHaagh has created a positive environment for all of the staff and students that come into her kitchen and is known as the “go to person”. She has demonstrated her creativity by dressing up as a lion in the school play “Wild about School Lunch” to promote the school lunch program. During the 2005 National School Lunch Week, VerHaagh wrote a song for the kids to sing karaoke to the tune of Take me out the Ballgame. While in the kitchen, she likes to decorate the serving area in various themes on a monthly basis. This year she received a Golden Plate Award (like a Golden Apple for teachers) from the students for her constant commitment.

The SNA Annual National Conference, July 16 – 19, 2006, features over 4,600 child nutrition and school foodservice industry professionals participating in over 80 workshops, the school nutrition industry’s largest exhibit hall and guest speakers including California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
