May 31, 2013 – The winter holidays may be six months away, but with School Nutrition’s online 2013-14 promotional calendar at your fingertips, you will find plenty of holidays to celebrate with your students each month. July brings the excitement of celebrating Independence Day, but you can keep kids in summer programs entertained and excited about school meals during the month of June with hiking safety tips and paraphernalia such as flashlights and hand sanitizer on National Trails Day (June 1), or give them a splash with a water-themed event at school on International Surfing Day (June 21).
Your child nutrition team may consider celebrating the whole month with Fireworks Safety Month (which runs until July 4). Ask your students to name their favorite firework, like the Snake, Sparklers or Roman Candles; have them share what they like about it and submit it for a chance to win a free ice cream. Post firework safety tips around the cafeteria and on the lunch line and quiz students to see how well they are paying attention. A correct answer could win prizes or treats!
But Independence Day isn’t the only day in July to be celebrated. Decorate the cafeteria with lanterns and lights during the Japan Bon Festival (July 13-15), an event held in honor of deceased ancestors where lanterns are lit for their souls. Teach your students about Japan and this cultural celebration, or encourage them to study more about their own ancestors, writing about what celebratory activity they would come up with if they could create a holiday in honor of their ancestors. Celebrate the entire month of July with National Watermelon Month. A cool watermelon treat each day or on select days may be just the thing to keep your students rushing to the cafeteria!

May 31, 2013 – The School Nutrition Foundation (SNF) congratulates Warrior Run (Pa.) School District, the recipient of the 2013 SNF/Winston Equipment Award. Located in central Pennsylvania, Warrior Run School District has an enrollment of 1,620 students and six school sites. Renee Frederick, Food Service Supervisor, has been with the district for 12 years and shared the many challenges of working with older equipment. The grant from Winston Industries will provide 10 new pieces of equipment to the district that will improve the quality, nutritional value, customer service, employee morale, time management and menu creativity.
SNF will be following the story of Warrior Run School District as the new equipment arrives and is put to work in the kitchens of four of the schools over the coming months.
SNF and Winston Industries are committed to supporting child nutrition programs and school foodservice nationwide. Each year since 2007, Winston has awarded equipment to one school district needing improvement of its school meal kitchen facilities.
