Julia Bauscher, SNS, Named 2013 Silver Plate Winner

February 28, 2013 – The International Foodservice Manufacturers Association (IFMA) honored Julia Bauscher, SNS, as a 2013 Silver Plate Award winner in the elementary and secondary schools category. The prestigious Silver Plate Award recognizes achievements in foodservice management, marketing, human resources and industry and civic participation.

Bauscher is director of school and community nutrition services for Jefferson County (Ky.) Public Schools. She also was recently named the 2012 winner of the FAME Golden School Foodservice Director of the Year Award.

Bauscher is SNA’s vice president. She also has served SNA on the national level as Child Nutrition Industry Conference co-chair (2012) and Nutrition Committee chair (2008-10). In addition, she has served as president of the Kentucky School Nutrition Association.

February 27, 2013 – Although online registration for the 2013 Legislative Action Conference (LAC) has closed, SNA still invites you to attend the Association’s premier political event, taking place from March 3 to 6 in Washington, D.C.

Marriott Hotel for a discussion with lawmakers and with each other about the political climate and how it relates to school nutrition, plus a variety of educational opportunities for professional development. SNA Announces STEPS Challenge Grand Prize Winner

February 19, 2013 – SNA has picked a winner in the STEPS survey prize drawing. Congratulations to Darlene Smetana of Pine City, Minnesota. Darlene won an all-expenses paid trip for two to attend the finale taping of the current season of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser”!

Darlene will be bringing her husband with her to enjoy the prize package, which includes:

  • Airfare for two to California
  • Two tickets to the finale taping
  • Hotel stay for two nights
  • $300 spending money

SNF Scholarship Applications Now Being Accepted Online

February 19, 2013 – In school or thinking of going back to school? Apply for the School Nutrition Foundation 4-in-1 Scholarship.

One application makes you eligible for four scholarships:

  • School Nutrition Foundation’s Professional Growth (funded by Kraft Foods)
  • Schwan’s Food Service
  • Winston Industries Build Your Future
  • Nancy Curry

Scholarships of up to $2,500 will be awarded to each recipient for each of the following: SNF Professional Growth, Schwan’s Food Service, and Winston Industries Build Your Future Scholarships. One scholarship of $500 is awarded for the Nancy Curry Scholarship.

SNF Announces the First Josephine Martin National Policy Fellow

February 15, 2013 – The School Nutrition Foundation (SNF) is pleased to announce the first Josephine Martin National Policy Fellow, Sandi Walter, SNS, from Maryville City (Tenn.) Schools.

Walter has 20 years of school nutrition experience and is the cafeteria manager of Coulter Grove Intermediate School in Maryville. She is a certified SNA trainer and currently serves as the president of the Maryville Chapter of the Tennessee School Nutrition Association. 

The award, established in July 2012 in honor of school nutrition pioneer and advocate Dr. Josephine Martin, enables an SNA member to attend the Legislative Action Conference (LAC) for the first time.

It is a fitting tribute to Dr. Martin’s passion for child nutrition and ensures that the voices of nutrition professionals will continue to be heard by legislators and policy makers at the local, state and national level.

When asked about her upcoming trip to Washington, Walter said, “Attending LAC offers me an opportunity to network with school nutrition leaders and learn about the important issues facing our industry. Child nutrition is where I want to be and is a field that allows for creativity and innovation, as well as providing me an opportunity to serve my community.”

Walter will be recognized during the first general session at LAC on Sunday, March 3rd. 

Funding for the Josephine Martin National Policy Fellow is made possible by the Josephine Martin Endowment Fund at SNF. The Endowment is still accepting contributions to reach its $75,000 goal. To date the Endowment has raised approximately $22,000.

February 14, 2013 – SNA’s District Profiles Database, an online tool that allows SNA members to view profiles of school nutrition programs, is undergoing a makeover! Over the past year, SNA has been working on a number of improvements, including making it more user-friendly and updating the types of information in the database to reflect the changing regulations facing school nutrition programs.

SNA is asking school nutrition programs to submit an up-to-date District Profile using the new online submission form. By doing so, you will:

Education Summit Brings Together Leaders in School Nutrition

February 8, 2013 - On February 4-5, representatives from SNA, the National Food Service Management Institute (NFSMI) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) came together for a first-of-its-kind Education Summit, which was hosted at SNA Headquarters in National Harbor, Md. This historic meeting was aimed at strengthening the school nutrition profession through productive collaboration on professional development and training for the industry.

This meeting marked the beginning of an ongoing process of building on each organization’s unique strengths, competencies, and focus areas to deliver the most efficient and effective training possible.

A total of 20 participants representing each association were on hand to participate in the day-and-a-half summit. Those in attendance included SNA Past Presidents Dr. Janey Thornton, SNS, USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services, and Dr. Katie Wilson, SNS, NFSMI Executive Director.

SNA President Sandra Ford, SNS, as well as SNA’s Executive Team, voiced the enthusiasm felt by all participants, noting, “By coming together, we can use our collective expertise and resources to improve school meals programs nationwide and strengthen the health and well-being of our nation’s children. Together, we will also be better positioned to address and navigate the challenges of today’s school nutrition profession.”

As a starting point in this collaboration, a number of action items and next steps were agreed to. These included:

  • Establishment of a partnership Steering Committee to oversee this collaborative effort going forward. This committee will begin its work within the next two weeks.
  • Identification of priority areas for collaboration, each aimed at improving professional development and training awareness, quality and access.

As this work continues, you can expect to see: improved partnership, leading to true synergy in professional development and training; reduced duplication of efforts and materials; and stronger reliance on the unique strengths and capabilities of each partner.

Each of the partners is excited about and committed to this effort and its ability to enhance the skills of school nutrition professionals and the overall performance of the industry.

Mark Your Calendars for the Inaugural International School Meals Day - March 8, 2013

February 6, 2013 – The purpose of the first ever International School Meals day is to raise awareness about the importance of teaching children around the world about good nutrition, to foster healthy eating habits in school and at home, and to share policies, practices, and research between countries.

School cafeterias across the country and the world can get involved. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Have an International Menu Day
  • Have international food tasting sessions or other fun food activities
  • Hold cooking classes with an international theme
  • Plan fundraising activities for charities which support school feeding programs in developing countries
  • Incorporate global citizenship and food culture into classroom learning
  • Partner with a school in another country and discover different food cultures
  • Send a message home to parents about the day or include information on your menus

School Nutrition Examines Poverty and Hunger in America
