School Cafeterias to Celebrate National School Breakfast Week, March 4-8
The School Breakfast Program contributes to academic achievement.
NATIONAL HARBOR, MD (February 28, 2013) – Next week, school cafeterias across the country will celebrate National School Breakfast Week (March 4-8) by hosting “Be a Star with School Breakfast,” a fun campaign designed to highlight how eating a balanced breakfast at school helps students shine.
“Thanks to the School Breakfast Program, 12 million students jump start their busy school days with a healthy meal, providing all the nutrition they need to focus on their studies,” said Sandra Ford, SNS, President of the School Nutrition Association. “School breakfast offers a critical service to children whose families struggle to make ends meet and a huge convenience for students who have to rush out the door before eating at home.”
Studies have shown that students who eat breakfast make greater academic gains, behave better in class, and are less frequently tardy, absent or visiting the nurse’s office. In fact, according to a new analysis released by Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign, students who eat school breakfast have the potential to achieve 17.5% higher scores on standardized math tests and attend 1.5 more days of school each year. Research also shows students who attend class more regularly are potentially 20% more likely to graduate from high school, and high school graduates typically earn $10,090 more a year while enjoying a 4% higher employment rate.
To reach more students with school breakfast, many schools are launching breakfast in the classroom programs, grab-n-go kiosks at the school doors, and breakfast-in-a-bag choices (Learn more at www.BeyondBreakfast.org). Schools are also offering healthier choices at breakfast time. Federal nutrition standards for school breakfast limit fat and portion size, and cafeterias are already working to meet new requirements for more whole grains, fruits and vegetables with breakfast.
“Be a Star with School Breakfast” will help cafeterias celebrate school breakfast programs with special menus, events and decorations, fun activities for students and a take home brochure for families.
“Be a Star with School Breakfast” was created by the non-profit School Nutrition Association with support from Kellogg’s Foodservice.
School Nutrition Association Issues Response to Proposed Competitive Food Regulations
NATIONAL HARBOR, MD (February 1, 2013) – School Nutrition Association released the following statement in response to the release of US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) proposed regulations to establish nutrition standards for “competitive” foods and beverages sold in schools. "School Nutrition Association (SNA) supports the goal of ensuring that all foods and beverages sold in schools are healthy options for students,” said SNA President Sandra Ford, SNS. “School nutrition professionals have been working hard to increase nutritious choices available in the cafeteria by serving more whole grains, fruits and vegetables and limiting the sodium and fat in meals - all part of ongoing efforts to implement new nutrition standards for school meals. SNA looks forward to reviewing the details of these newly proposed competitive food regulations and providing feedback through the public comment process.”
The proposed rule would apply to all foods and beverages sold during the school day from vending machines, school stores and snack bars on campus, as well as a la carte items sold in the cafeteria. The regulations do not apply to reimbursable school meals, which meet their own nutrition standards, updated on July 1, 2012. Also, the rule does not apply to classroom parties, occasional fundraisers and bake sales, items sold at sporting events after school hours or foods or beverages brought to school from home.
