SNA Monitors Participation in Lunch and Breakfast Programs

2013-09-16

September 16, 2013 – With the many changes occurring in school nutrition programs, SNA has been monitoring data from USDA to understand how national participation in lunch and breakfast programs is changing compared to the previous school year. Based on preliminary data for the 2012-13 school year (September 2012 through May 2013), 30.8 million students participated in the National School Lunch Program on an average day. This is a 3.2% decrease compared to the 2011-12 school year. While average lunch participation has decreased, participation in the School Breakfast Program has increased reaching on average 13.1 million students per day. This is a 2.16% increase compared to the 2012-13 school year. More information is available on SNA's resource center.
