USDA Releases Proposed Standards for Competitive Foods

Today, USDA released the proposed rule regarding a national policy on competitive foods in schools. In preparation for the rule, SNA created a competitive food taskforce. Now that the proposed rule has been released, SNA has now begun the process of gathering information and comments to respond to USDA. The diverse task force is comprised of representatives from the various regions, operators, and industry sectors and will be meeting in the near future at SNA headquarters to draft a response that incorporates the comments and concerns from the entire SNA membership.

The proposed rule would apply to all foods and beverages sold during the school day from vending machines, school stores and snack bars on campus, as well as a la carte items sold in the cafeteria.  The regulations do not apply to reimbursable school meals, which meet their own nutrition standards, updated on July 1, 2012.  Also, the rule does not apply to classroom parties, occasional fundraisers and bake sales, items sold at sporting events after school hours or foods or beverages brought to school from home.

The competitive foods program will be a topic of conversation at LAC and the task force will be represented and able to gather comments from LAC attendees. Please note that this will be just one of the ways to submit comments to SNA.
